Tasting Notes

This wine is ruby red in colour, with a complex and intense nose of red cherries, raspberries and cranberries, which continue through onto the palate. The wine has plush smooth tannins with a lingering spicy finish and hints of vanilla.

Producer

Vesevo is named after the famed volcano Mt. Vesuvio, in whose shadow sit the vineyards. Vesevo has a close and well developed association with the best growers in the area comprising approximately 60 hectares of carefully selected and tended vineyards.  The vineyards enjoy the rich volcanic soils which impart mineral nuances to the wines.

The wines are crafted by a team headed by internationally known Alberto Antonini.  All grapes are hand-picked and then enjoy the best of modern technology to embody a reinterpretation of the winemaking which has taken place here for thousands of years.

Winemaking

The Vesevo vineyards are situated between 200 and 400 metres above sea level, and benefit from the cool breeze blowing off the Bay of Naples. Over the centuries, this breeze has blown volcanic ash from Vesuvius inland to give the soil here a volcanic character.

After hand harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and crushed. Fermentation lasts 15 days at temperatures of up to 26°C. The wine is then transferred into stainless-steel tanks where it remains for one month. It is then aged in 225L American oak barrels for eight months prior to bottling.

Fun Fact

Vesevo is found on the slopes of the volcano Mount Vesuvius. Starting with the famous eruption in 79 AD that swept the city of Pompeii (the town was 8 kilometres from the volcano) Vesuvius has erupted over 40 times, the last one in 1944.

The wine produced here has rich complexities and aromas due to a combination of minerals deposited by millennia of volcanic activity.

Food pairing

Rich roasted and braised meat dishes and meat based pasta dishes.
