Tasting Notes
This wine is a bright, deep ruby red in colour. On the nose, this is an intense, complex wine with aromas redolent of red berry fruits and hints of vanilla which follow onto the structured palate which has firm but smooth tannins and a clean, dry finish.
Producer
Vesevo is named after the famed volcano Mt. Vesuvio, in whose shadow sit the vineyards. Vesevo has a close and well developed association with the best growers in the area comprising approximately 60 hectares of carefully selected and tended vineyards. The vineyards enjoy the rich volcanic soils which impart mineral nuances to the wines.
The wines are crafted by a team headed by internationally known Alberto Antonini. All grapes are hand-picked and then enjoy the best of modern technology to embody a reinterpretation of the winemaking which has taken place here for thousands of years.
Winemaking
Fruit for this wine was sourced from vineyards of over 100 years old in Avellino, east of Naples. It is here that the Aglianico has found its chosen land and where it is able to give unique wines. The vineyards are situated between 450 and 550 metres above sea level, and are always subject to a cool breeze that blows off the Bay of Naples. This same breeze has, over centuries, blown volcanic ash from Vesuvius inland. Soil here has a volcanic, clayey and calcareous character. The vines are trained with a spurred cordon system.
After hand harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and crushed. Maceration lasts up to 25 days to extract as much colour and intense flavours from the skins as possible. After fermentation, the wine is then aged in a selection of 225L French oak barriques for 16 months before continuing its maturation process in bottle prior to release.
Fun Fact
The story behind Ensis: A precious and captivating packaging; the sword on the label is made by antique brass which represents the sword of Vesevo. Ensis, comes from the latin word meaning sword, fight and tells the story of Vesevo and Sebeto, two young men both deeply in love with a beautiful girl named Leucopetra. For a long time both men courted, the beautiful girl, but she could not make up her mind which of them to choose. One day, while she was picking shells on the beach, Vesevo and Sebeto appeared in front of her and began a terrible fight. Leucopetra got so frightened, she ran into the water and called for her father, Neptune, who turned her into the biggest and most beautiful sea stack. Sebeto, shattered by the pain, cried so desperately, he turned into a river, that mysteriously disappeared thousands of years after. Vesevo lost his mind. The fire of his love was turned into the fire of the Volcano (Vesuvio).
