Producer
Based in the 'chocolate box' pretty village of Riquewihr in the heart of Alsace, Dopff & Irion has a long history dating back to the 16th century when the two families came together. When René Dopff became head of the firm in 1945 he dropped the old winemaking techniques and the traditional, illegible gothic script on the labels and set the tone for the forward looking company that exists to this day. Environmentally friendly vineyard regimes with the latest techniques in propagation and vine management, state of the art winemaking technology, even screwcaps !
Derived from the best terroirs, Cuvée René Dopff was created in honour of the founder of Maison Dopff & Irion. René Dopff produced dry and natural wines, along the lines of the cellar’s current selection.
Winemaking
The harvest is entirely handpicked. First sorting takes place in the vineyard and baskaets are partially filled baskets to avoid crushing the berries. Gentle extraction is achieved through low pressure pressing and winemaking at a controlled temperature. After racking and controlled temperature fermentation the wines remain on their fine lees for four months before bottling, thus enhancing the mellow apple pie flavours and mouth filling texture. The wine is bottled after several months in stainless steel.
Fun Fact
The wine region of Alsace is unique in France because of the combination of grapes grown there. Specialising in German grape varieties like Gewurztraminer and Riesling, the Alsace wine region produces largely white wines such as Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc.
Food pairing
A versatile wine which is equally at home with Eggs Benedict and light summer dishes. Its aromatic qualities make it especially suited for Asian and oriental dishes including curries, dim sum, pad thai as well as sushi and sashimi.
