Tasting Note
A complex aromatic nose of citrus, passion fruit, crisp pineapple and green pepper is followed by a full bodied palate, redolent with tropical flavours and flinty mineral notes in the long finish.
Producer
When Flagstone’s cellar was first settled in the Waterfront in Cape Town without any of its own vineyards, the winemaking team was hailed as pioneers and mavericks in the South African wine industry. The cellar was eventually moved to an old dynamite factory in the Helderberg, where grapes are still carefully sourced from every far-flung and forgotten corner of the Western Cape.
After over 20 years of doing things differently and not merely following the herd, Flagstone’s winemaking philosophy is still reflected by its world-class, award-winning wines.
Winemaking
The Free Run is a unique Sauvignon Blanc with grapes made from Elgin and Elim, considered the best locations for this expressive varietal. The fruit is treated with fanatical care to retain as much of the natural, zesty, floral freshness as possible. Inert gas is used to keep oxygen away at each stage of winemaking. A traditional stirring of the lees is used to craft a succulent, mouth-watering, balanced and above all, drinkable wine. The name Free Run comes from the method of using only the first, free-flowing, free run juice to make this wine.
Fun Fac
The Celtic emblem adorning the Free Run Sauvignon Blanc bottles represents the cycles and seasons of life, symbolising the cycles of nature that create each vintage.
Food pairing
Pairs well with foods that offer a certain amount of zest, combining particularly well with veal lemone and grilled calamari. Also try it with steamed asparagus, a spaghetti vongole, an avocado soup or an herbed risotto.
