Producer

Cavino was founded in 1958 in Aigio by Konstantinos Anastasiou and Ioannis Douskas.

Aigio, is located in a unique landscape of vineyards. The slopes of Aigialia combine with the mountains and the sea in a unique way to form a special microclimate.

Cavino primarily uses indigenous grape varieties such as Agiorgitiko and Moschfilero as well as dabbling in international varieties.

Today, the company exports over 70% of its production and prides itself on being one of Greece’s leading exports of wines and spirits.

Winemaking

Parcels of Agiorgitiko are harvested, and vinified with no oak influence. Ageing in steel tanks ensure the varietal signature flavours of plum sauce and black pepper are evident.

Fun Fact

In Nemea, the wine made from Agiorgitiko is nicknamed the "Blood of Hercules" because of the legend that after the Greek hero slew the Nemean lion, it was the local Nemean wine made from Agiorgitiko that he consumed. (Some versions of the story have Hercules consuming the wine before slaying the lion.) Another legend states that the wine was a palace favourite of king Agamemnon who led the Greek forces during the Trojan War.

Food pairing

Try this with Greek dishes like Ledera (vegetable appetisers with olive oil and tomato sauce) and Soutzoukakia, a typical Sunday lunch dish of meatballs in sweet-spiced tomato sauce. Greek lamb is considered a national dish and can be roasted or slow cooked until the meat falls of the bone. No Greek meal is complete without Moussaka and of Agiorgitiko is an ideal partner for this eggplant based dish
