Tasting Note

The nose is complex with ripe black fruits aromas and leafy forest notes. On the palate rich black cherries dominate with mature plums well balanced with some mint and dried herbs giving a luscious mouthfeel. The tannic finish lingers with some soft vanilla notes

Producer

The Saby family's vineyard started in the XVIII century, in 1775, after the acquisition of the first plot in Saint Emilion. Heirs of the passion for winemaking passed down through generations, the sons today, Jean-Christophe and Jean-Philippe, oenologists, make intense and mature wines utilising their traditional and modern technical skills.

Winemaking

This wine comes from very old vines (45 years), and as is typical for the Right Bank in Bordeaux, the focus is on Merlot which makes up 80% of this blend. Usually the balance would be Cabernet Franc, but Cabernet Sauvignon has been selected for Monturon to add more complexity and structure to the mellow Merlot.

Fun Fact

Saint-Emilion's history goes back to prehistoric times. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with fascinating Romanesque churches and ruins along steep and narrow streets. The Romans planted vineyards in what was to become Saint-Emilion as early as the 2nd century. The Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation has restrictions on production to ensure higher quality and about 80 wineries qualify to use the SEGC designation.

Food pairing

This dry wine is excellent with rich roasted meats and slow cooked lamb. It also goes well with charcuterie and strong cheeses

Awards & Accolades

3.8 Vivino

Gold Medal Concourse de Bordeaux

89 points Falstaff

88 points Wine Enthusiast

“While super ripe Merlot dominates this wine, the finer structure of the Cabernet Franc add shape and firmness. The wine will age well.”
