Tasting Note
A unique Pinot Noir Vinified in White turns a succulent, bold red into a fresh tasting, faintly fruity white wine. Rich fruit flavours permeate the palate with the roundness of a Chardonnay, and the mysterious juiciness of a Pinot Nero contradicted by mineral notes I the long finish.
Producer
The Torti winery was established in 1910 by Giovanni Torti. Succeeding generations have been heavily involved in winemaking and the winery today is operated by Dino Torti. Taking pride in their expansive vineyards, the winery has had particular success with Pinot Nero and especially indigenous grape varietals which thrive in the Lombardy region
Winemaking
While Pinot Nero (or Noir) is a red skinned grape, the pulp is a neutral colour making this a grape of choice for sophisticated wines like Champagne where grape flavours are extracted without the red colour.
Grapes from the Torti vineyards are hand harvested and very gently pressed with no maceration on skins. This ensure that flavours remain fresh with no tannic influence or red colour from the grapes.
All fermentation and maturation is in stainless steel to preserve the fresh fruit elements of Pinot Noir.
Fun Fact
Situated in Lombardy, the Otrepo Pavese area is the most northerly wine region in Italy. Its town of Pavia (Pavese in Italian) is just 45 kms south of Milan. It is bordered by the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont. Amazingly, the area is “shaped like a bunch of grapes”, and is located exactly half way between the North Pole and the Equator, on the 45th parallel like Bordeaux in France.
Food pairing
A very food friendly wine. Ideal with light fish and seafood including sushi and sashimi. It can also work well with white meat and vegetable dishes cooked in a light style like tempura.
