Tasting Note

The wine opens with notes of apple, grapefruit and apricot aromas framed by bright floral aromatics. This classically styled Albarino shines with peach and citrus fruits with a crisp minerality and bright acidity that carries through to a long, refreshing finish.

Producer

The Martín Códax winery was founded in 1986 as a cooperative with about 50 local grape growers in Galicia in the northwest corner of Spain. Today, Martín Códax oversees more than 1,400 small vineyard parcels farmed by 550 families in the Rías Baixas region. Quality is maintained through continuous investment in research, innovation, and talented, creative people. The "signature” wine of Martín Códax is Albariño, the superb white wine that has made Galicia famous among connoisseurs around the world.

Winemaking

The Albarino vineyards are right on the edge of the Galacian coast in Salnes perched on high cliffs facing the wild Atlantic. The close proximity to the ocean can be detected in the steely saltiness on the palate. Grapes are harvested by hand and the must is fermented in chilled stainless steel tanks to ensure the pure Albarino textures are preserved.

Fun Fact

Bodegas Martín Códax was named after the most known Galician troubadour from the 13th century whose medieval poems (cantigas), the oldest in the Galician-Portuguese language, have survived to the present. In the poems, the troubadour sings about love, the sea and the coastline. He is honoured today with a transcription of one of his cantigas appearing on the Albarino label.

Food pairing

The saline edge in the wine makes this ideal with all kinds of seafood, especially “au naturel”. It can also accompany white meats and fresh cheeses.
